Biography
General information
Asander, the Bosporus governor, is primarily known for the fact that in 47 BC. e. after losing his patron king Tsar Farnak II , son of Mithridates VI Eupator in the war with Rome , betrayed him and proclaimed himself archon , and later king of the Bosporus . In a further feud, Asander killed Farnak [1] .
Legitimizing the Reign
However, the legitimacy of the reign of Asander due to the assassination of Farnak was in great doubt and could cause the disagreement of Rome. To solve the problem, Asander married Dynami , the daughter of Farnak, thus ensuring the continuity of power, the support of the local population and the opportunity to turn to Rome to confirm his reign [2] .
Reign
Asander had a difficult relationship with Rome and even fought with Mithridates of Pergamon , henchman of Julius Caesar on the Bosporus throne. Stability came only under the emperor Octavian Augustus . Between 27 and 17 years BC e. Rome finally recognized Asander as the Bosporus king [3] .
As a strong ruler, Asander at the end of his life became depressed and died at the age of 93 as a result of voluntary starvation. Death caused a dynastic crisis, which ended with the coming to power of his only son Aspurgus ( lat. Tiberius Julius Aspurgus ) [1] .
