Biography and Proceedings
He studied medicine and natural sciences in Liege , then headed the hospital for the mentally ill. From an early age, Candez worked diligently in the study of the biology and systematics of insects and mainly coleopterans ; he was considered one of the best experts in the family of nutcrackers (Elateridae), which he collected a rich collection.
Candez's scientific works deal mainly with the taxonomy of this family; the largest of them are as follows: “The Catalog des larves des Coléoptères connues jusqu'à ce jour etc.” (together with F. Chapuis , 1853 ); Monographie des Elatérides ( 1856 - 1863 ); “Elaterides nouveaux” (6th edition, 1865 - 1896 ); “Des Insectes nuisibles ou utiles” ( 1862 ) and many other works.
Kandez also gained fame for his novels from animal life, translated, among others, into Russian:
- “Darling: The Amazing Adventures of Five Sparrows” / Per. L.V. R. Spb.: Devrien Publishing House , 1902.
