He came from the Netherlands, moved to Italy with his friend, who later became Pope under the name of Adrian VI , at whose court he lived.
Although Kampenze was not himself in Russia , he could be referred to as a writer on Russia. From the stories of his father, brother and other merchants trading with Muscovy, he collected information about this country and, using them, sent a letter to Pope Clement VII , in which he tried to convince him of the need to promote the unification of the churches. The letter to Kampenze, which is kept in the Vatican Archive, was published more than once under the title “Lettera d'Alberto Campense” (Venice, 1543 , etc.), and also included in the second volume of the collection by Ramusio, “Raccolta de viaggi”. The Russian translation of it was published in the I T. published by V. Semyonov "Library of foreign writers about Russia" (St. Petersburg, 1836 ).
