Building History
The theater is located in the former building of the Slovak National Bank (later the General Credit Bank was located here), on the corner of Laurinska Street and Štura Street. The building was built in 1943 - 1947 . The project won in a public competition of bank buildings and chamber theater. The winners of the competition were architects Eugen Kramar and Stefan Lukacovic. In 1944, the general construction was completed and only the construction of the banking part continued. In 1948 a decision was made to transfer the building to the Slovak National Theater , and the building began to be equipped with theater equipment.
The construction was carried out by Slovak construction companies, and the foreign companies Wiener Bruckenbau and Siemens delivered technological equipment for the theater stage. Decorator Frantisek Gaidos designed the stage, foyer and curtain. Mosaic windows in the lobby were created by the famous Slovak artist Janko Alexi . The construction was completed in 1955 and in the same year, the drama unit of the Slovak National Theater moved from an unsatisfactory historic building to a completely new, own theater building.
The theater underwent its first reconstruction in 1968 , when the location of the stage was changed and the number of seats for spectators was reduced. The latest modernization at the moment took place in the first half of the 1980s (mainly related to stage equipment).
In 2007, the Ministry of Culture sold the theater building to the city of Bratislava . The authorities of Bratislava promised that the building will continue to be used for cultural purposes [1] .
