Story
Siberia , the 1930s. Down along the Siberian river Mane there passes an artel of rafters who clean the banks of a dried-up forest. Here they meet the 10-year-old Ilya, who ran away from home after a quarrel with his stepmother. He asked the artisans to take him with them to the mouth of the river, where his grandparents live. The summer passed in dangerous and hard work, but for the rest of his life the boy will remain grateful to these severe people.

Attitude of the author of the literary source to the film adaptation
Different sources have different estimates of film adaptation by Viktor Astafyev: from “quite tolerable” [1] to “good - very modest, but made with great respect for our people and the earth” and “magnificent” [2] . At the same time, Astafyev remained dissatisfied with the name chosen for the film, considering both his own and the director's versions more suitable (respectively, “The smell of strawberries” and “Sretenie”) [3] .
Assessment of film critics
In a brief review of the magazine "Soviet Screen" the film is described as follows: "In the new picture ... there is an atmosphere of high morality, genuine strict kindness" [4] .
