In January 2006, on a deserted winter road outside Bemidji, Minnesota, Lorne Malvo knocks down a deer and faints. A man in his underwear crawls out of the trunk of his car and runs away towards the forest. In the city, Sam Hess confronts Lester Nigard - a schoolgirl who humiliated Nygard in the past - and their meeting leads Lester to accidentally get a nose injury. At the hospital, Nygard and Malvo are close by waiting for a doctor and get to know each other. Nygard talks about the cause of his injury and Malvo proposes to kill Sam for this, to which Lester does not respond either with consent or with refusal. After some time, Malvo kills Hess, telling Lester that he did not say no. Meanwhile, police chief Vern Thurman and deputy sheriff Molly Solverson are investigating the car incident and finding a man in his underwear who is frozen to death in the forest. They are also investigating the murder of Sam Hess and find out that they heard in the hospital how Nygard talked about Hess with Malvo. Thurman arrives at Nygard’s house to question him at the very moment when Nygard, in a fit of anger, kills his wife Pearl, tired of her constant insults. Nigard calls to Malvo and asks for help. Malvo arrives and kills Thurman, but the policeman manages to radiate help. Malvo disappears, and Leicester strikes himself to appear uninvolved in the double murder. Later in Duluth, officer Gus Grimley stops Mulvo for speeding. Malvo makes the policeman understand that he has a choice - to insist on his own (and die), or let Malvo go (and survive). Malvo leaves Grimli confused and the policeman does not report the incident.

Numbers and Rench arrive in Bemidji to find Sam Hess's killer. Hess's lawyer - Max Gold - sends them to the strip club, giving a description of Malvo. Having stolen the wrong person, Numbers and Rench drown him in the hole. Meanwhile, Bill Oswalt takes the place of the chief of police and assistant Molly Solverson is arguing with him over suspects. In her opinion, Nigard is associated with the driver of a car that had an accident, as well as with the murder of Sam Hess, Pearl Nigard and Thurman. Oswalt believes that this is a guest performer. In Duluth, the “supermarket king,” Stavros Mailos, hires Malvo to find the one to blackmail him. The news of the Bemidji killings reaches the police station in Duluth and Officer Grimley realizes that the driver he released could have been associated with this.

Molly Solverson discovers that a man who was frozen in the woods was abducted from his place of work in St. Paul, probably due to debts made at rates. From the surveillance camera in the office a partially darkened face of the thief was obtained. Nygard calls Gina, the widow of Sam Hess, for an insurance policy, while Numbers and Rench look at Hess's house outside. They then visit Nygard at his office, intimidating him to get information, but retreat when Solverson suddenly appears. Molly briefly shows Lester a photo of Malvo and his reaction clearly indicates that he recognized this face. Meanwhile, Malvo is dating Don Champ, Mylos’s fitness instructor, and says he knows that he is a blackmailer. Malvo takes the blackmail scheme into service and begins to play on the religious feelings of Maylos. He kills Maylos’s dog, replaces him with the painkiller Adderol, and puts the pig’s blood in the shower water supply system. Gus finally confesses to his boss that he released Malvo, and arrives at Bemidji Police Station to talk with Solverson about the killings.

In 1987, the Maylos family was heavily in debt. On a deserted winter road, their car stops - gasoline has run out. Maylos prays for help. Getting out of the car, he finds a bag full of money (this is a reference to the original film "Fargo"). At present, Champ, under the guise of a plumber, examines the water supply in the house of Mylos and says that everything is in order, but he notes that the blood flows are reminiscent of a Bible episode about disasters sent to Egypt. Grimley Officer sees Mulvo on the street near Maylos’s house and arrests him. Grimley calls Molly Solverson, who is going to go to Duluth, but her boss decides for her and drives himself. Malvo presents documents according to which he is Frank Petersen, a Lutheran priest from Bodet, also with an alibi. Malvo (like Petersen) is released and when he leaves, Gus calls him “Lorne Malvo” to show that he knows who he is. Later, Mulvo and Champ produce hundreds of grasshoppers at the Mylos supermarket to mimic the locust invasion. Meanwhile, Numbers and Rench kidnap Nygard, but he manages to escape. Freed, he strikes a police officer so that he is arrested and taken away from his pursuers. In the evening, Numbers and Rench fight in a bar and end up in the same cell with Leicester.

In the cell of the police station, Numbers and Rench beat out Leicester that Sam Hess’s killer is Malvo. They are released, and Nygard is sent to the hospital due to blood poisoning: his hand was injured when Malvo fired a shotgun at Thurman's police chief. Nygard hid the wound, realizing that she was proving his presence in the room when Thurman was alive. Upon learning of this wound, Molly Solverson convinces the chief of police Oswalt that the last two cases are connected. Mylos is already close to giving the money the blackmailer demands, and Malvo locks Champ in the closet of his own kitchen so that he does not ruin Malvo's plans. Taking Mylos to the house, Malvo notices Grimley's car and secretly follows him to the house. On the street, Malvo faces Grimley’s watchful neighbor, threatens him and drives away.

Malvo forces Champ to make a call to Milos, who is ready to take the ransom to where he wants. Malvo then stuns Champ and ties him up on the stairs, wrapping an unloaded shotgun in his hand, taking a few random shots at neighboring houses and escaping before the police begin to storm the house. Police officers rush in and shoot Champ. In Duluth, Solverson and Grimley discuss recent killings and hear reports of gunfire nearby. When they get to the place, they find a car barrier set up by Numbers and Rench in order to catch Malvo. The shootout begins in a dense snowstorm. Malvo manages to watch over Numbers and from him, Malvo finds out who hired them, and then cuts Nambers's throat. Solverson and Grimley are separated in a blizzard, Solverson wounds Rencha, and the blinded Grimley accidentally shoots Molly. Meanwhile, Mylos returns to the place where he found a bag with money 19 years ago, and bury a ransom in the snow. He believes that God will forgive him for taking the money then, but on the way home he finds his bodyguard and son Dmitry dead in a car accident. In Bemidji, Nygard sneaks out of the hospital and puts the murder weapon and other evidence in his brother’s gun safe. In addition, he puts an unloaded pistol in his nephew's schoolbag and returns unnoticed to the hospital.

At the hospital, officer Grimley is worried about Molly Solverson, who was injured by an accidental bullet. At school, a pistol was found in the briefcase, as a result of which the police ransacked Brother Nygard’s house and found evidence placed in the weapons safe. Lester invents a new version for the police, according to which his brother killed Pearl because of a love story, and he hid the wound because he did not want to fraud his brother. Lester is released, and his brother is taken into custody. Molly Solverson interrogates Rench, who is in custody at the hospital, and tells him that Numbers has been killed. Deaf Rench does not want to cooperate. Meanwhile, Malvo, under the noses of two FBI agents conducting street surveillance, invades the office of the company that sent the killers - Numbers and Rench - and kills 22 people there. Nygard seduces Hess's widow, promising her to deal with insurance without saying that the insurance was canceled due to late payment. Returning to Bemidji, Solverson anxiously learns about the arrest of Brother Nygard.

After his brother’s arrest, Nigard comforts his wife Kitty, who believes her husband is guilty. Soon, Nygard throws Pearl stuff, starting a new life. Gina Hess with her sons bursts into the office of the Nigart insurance company, demanding payments for Hes's canceled insurance and accusing Lester of having divorced her for sex. Nygard gives her and the boys a sharp rebuff, impressing his colleague Linda Park with his assertiveness. Meanwhile, Solverson returns to the sheriff’s office and tries to rediscover the Lester Nygard case, but unsuccessfully. At Duluth’s hospital, Malvo kills a policeman near Rench’s door and tells Rench that he killed Numbers. Malvo leaves Renchu the key to the handcuffs and offers to meet someday later if Rench wants revenge. FBI agents Pepper and Budge, who were observed in Fargo during the massacre organized by Malvo, are demoted to clerks. A year later, Grimley, now a postal worker, takes Molly Solverson as his wife. In Las Vegas, Nygarth, married to Linda, receives the award as seller of the year. In the hotel bar, Leicester notices Malvo, who changed his appearance - dyed his hair gray and began to wear a goatee instead of a thick beard.

Nigard boldly approaches Malvo and his company at the bar and goes with them to the elevator, insistently demanding that Malvo recognize him. Instead, in the elevator, Malvo kills his “colleagues” and his “bride”. Malvo tells Lester that he has been impersonating a dentist in Kansas City for quite some time to get close to a person under the witness protection program. Nigard hits Malvo on the head and runs into his room. Raising Linda, he makes her urgently fly home with him. Soon, the police on surveillance cameras determines that Nygard can witness the triple murder in the elevator and requests the police Bemidji. Assistant Sheriff Solverson interrogates Lester in his new home, but he denies seeing anything. Agents Budge and Pepper from Fargo, finding a clue about the shooter who destroyed their career, go to Bemidji to meet with Solverson. Impressed by the evidence gathered by her, they ignore the sheriff and thank Molly. Delivering mail, Grimley spots Malvo driving a red BMW. In Bemidji, Malvo stops at Lou (Molly's father) diner and asks about Nygard. Lou is suspicious of him and provides little information. In the meantime, Nigard is about to hide and quickly organizes a trip to Acapulco with Linda. They stop at their office to collect their passports and money, and instead of himself, Nygard sends Linda to the office, putting on his jacket. He sees Malvo shoot at Linda. When leaving, Malvo sees Nygard’s car, but Leicester himself goes unnoticed.

Immediately after the murder of Linda, Lester comes to the nearby diner Lou and orders a dinner for two, showing what awaits her. Going out to the payphone, he calls the police, changing his voice, and reports the shooting, then returns to the diner. After Linda's body is found, Nygard is interrogated at the station and released. In the meantime, Lou tells Grimley that perhaps Malvo is back in Bemidji. Grimley rushes to the police station to warn Molly, and along the way he again sees a red BMW - possibly Malvo's car - on a branch from the main road. Deciding to test his hunch, Grimley sees Malvo getting out of the house, gets into the car and drives off. In the city of Malvo, he comes to a car dealer and takes a car, the same as the FBI. Sheriff Oswalt informs Solverson that he is planning to retire and wants her to become the new boss. Agents Pepper and Budge bring Nygard home, not knowing that they are followed by Malvo. Nygard does not allow agents to stay in the house, so they watch from the outside. When a car approaches them, they take out a weapon and approach the driver. Behind the wheel is a car salesman whose hands are tied to the steering wheel with adhesive tape. Malvo attacks agents and kills them. Nigard tries to dial 911, and Malvo bursts into the house and goes upstairs, but steps into the bear trap prepared by Nigard. Nygart shoots, but misses. Malvo responds, but also smears, gets out of the trap and goes to his shelter to take care of a badly damaged leg. Grimley is waiting in the house, meets Malvo and shoots - Malvo is killed. Later, Grimley shows Molly a Malvo bag containing many recordings of conversations, including Nygard's call that he killed his wife. Two weeks later, the police manage to track Naygard in a national park in Montana, they chase him on a snowmobile on the ice of a frozen lake. Nygard falls and falls under the ice.
