History

The debut is named for the American chess amateur Alonzo Jerome (1834-1902), who published an analysis of this beginning in the Dubuque Chess Journal in April 1874. In modern chess practice is rare.

Debut Ideas

The main idea of the gambit is to sacrifice an bishop for a pawn , to deprive the black king of the castling and, taking advantage of his unreliable position, to get chances of an attack. In his study, A. Jerome after 4. ... Kre8: f7 recommended to continue the game by 5. Kf3: e5 + Kc6: e5 6. Фd1-h5 + (or 6. d2-d4 ), which, in his opinion, despite the good chances of black on defense, gave White interesting opportunities to continue the attack.

Options

  • 4. ... Kpe8-f8? - Jerome's refused gambit, unprofitable for blacks, since they remain without a pawn in a bad position.
  • 4. ... Cre8: f7 - Jerome's accepted gambit.

        • 6. ... Ke5-g6 7. Фf5-d5 + Kpf7-f8 8. Фd5: c5 + d7-d6 9. Фc5-e3 - White receives compensation for the donated material in the form of two central pawns and the vulnerable position of the black king.
        • 6. ... Крf7-f8 Фh5: e5 7. d7-d6 Фe5-g3 - White receives material compensation as in the previous version, but in this case, the position of black is more successful.
        • 6. ... Крf7-e6 - blacks tend to keep the figure in the center. With the right game, they are able to fend off white threats.
          • 7. Фh5-e5 Kpe6-d6 8. f2-f4 or 8. d2-d4
