In Livorno, he was a student of Bernardo Nucci, then studied at the Conservatory of San Pietro a Mayella and completed his studies at the Bologna Philharmonic Academy .
Of the operas he wrote, Esmeralda was a major success, staged also in St. Petersburg in 1869 on the stage of the Imperial Italian Opera. Among the other operas of Campana - Giulio d'Este ( 1841 ), Mazepa ( 1850 ), Almina ( 1860 ), etc. Campana wrote many romances, canonets, duets, published a collection of solfeggio for mezzo-soprano and contralto .
