Geography

Area 4,066 km².

History

Active development of the area began in the 1930s , when reserves of muscovite were found in the Yona village area.

In 1933, large deposits of iron ore were found in the modern city of Kovdor.

Since 1953, the construction of the Kovdor Mining and Processing Plant began .

In 1956, the working village of Kovdor was transformed into an urban-type village , and in 1965 received the status of a city.

In 1979, the Kovdor district was formed, which included the Yonsky rural territorial district.
