Biography

Born on November 15, 1926 in the village of Zemlyanye Khutor (now Atkarsky district , Saratov region ). Since 1939 he studied at the Leningrad Art School at the Academy of Arts of the USSR . A 16-year-old teenager went to the front of World War II , became the "son of a regiment" of the First Ukrainian Front . After the war, he attended drawing classes at the Art School, in 1947 - 1953 he studied at the KGHI with K. D. Trohimenko , G. Titov, K. Eleva, M. A. Sharonov [1] .

At the time of the thesis creation, V. Shatalin was already an absolutely trained master, capable of independently solving creative problems. The diploma work “Novgorod Militia” ( 1953 ), as well as historical works “Koleivschina” ( 1952 ), “Brotherly Meeting” ( 1953 ), “Tatar Invasion” ( 1954 ), “Lukyan Kobylitsa” ( 1954 ), “The Battle of Pereyaslav- Khmelnitsky ”( 1954 ) and others, created in the last courses of the institute and in the early years of independent creative work, are distinguished by compositional harmony and high professionalism of the painter [2] .

The theme of the Great Patriotic War deeply worried V. Shatalin. Everything that he experienced as a young man at the front is embodied in artistic canvases. In this regard, the picture “Comrades in Comrade” ( 1976 ) is largely autobiographical. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the artist turns to the topic of modernity. Compositions "The Legend of the North" ( 1977 ), "It's raining. Geologists ”( 1981 ), portraits of the composer G. Mayboroda ( 1977 - 1978 ), the writer M. Nagnibida ( 1979 ), the famous pilot, Twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Colonel General V. Lavrinenkov amaze with high skill and psychology [3] .

Member of the USSR Union of Artists since 1957, was repeatedly elected secretary of the Board of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR and secretary of the Board of the Union of Artists of the USSR. Member of the National Union of Artists . Corresponding Member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (since 1978 ). Academician AIU (since 1997 ).

In 1966 - 2003 he taught at the Kiev State Art Institute. Professor since 1976 .

He lived and worked mainly in Kiev . He died on July 2, 2003 . He was buried in Kiev at the Baykovsky cemetery (plot No. 49a).
