Biography

Born on June 23, 1929 in the village of Rozhnov (now Ivano-Frankivsk region , Ukraine ). He was the first-born of his parents - Pyotr Fedorovich and Maria Onufrievna.

After graduating from the Rozhniv seven-year school, he continued his studies at the Kosovo secondary school, which he graduated in 1948 and entered at the Chernivtsi State University, Faculty of Philology, which he graduated in 1953. He married Yaroslav Mikhailovna Baznik, who was born in 1931 in a family of teachers in Poznanshchina ( Poland ). Since 1933, Yaroslava lived with her father in Kosovo , and her mother continued to teach in Poland.

He worked as a deputy for scientific work at the Chernivtsi Museum of Local Lore, and since 1959, at the T. G. Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kiev . Doctor of Philology , professor, encyclopedic scientist, member of SPU , author of many essays, articles, employee of the London magazine, member of the Hutsul Research Institute in the USA , member of the editorial board of the Ukrainian Literary Encyclopedia, one of the active authors of the Word and Time journal, chief bibliographer of the National parliamentary library.

He died on January 10, 2001 . He was buried in Kiev at the Baykovsky cemetery . His work is continued by his son Vladimir Fedorovich - a literary critic, professor, works at the National Pedagogical University named after N.P. Drahomanov.

Scientific activity

Researcher of Ukrainian literature of the late XIX - early XX centuries, inter-Slavic literary relationships, the history of Ukrainian criticism and journalism, textologist. Secretary of the Editorial Board of the 50-volume edition of the works of I. Ya. Franko ,

  • one of the authors and compilers of the 8-volume “History of Ukrainian Literature”,
  • editions of "The World Greatness of Shevchenko" (1967),
  • “Olga Kobylyanskaya in criticism and memories” (1963),
  • author of the book Our Duma, Our Song (1991),
  • essay "Bogdan the Lepky" (1992),
  • reference book “With Ukraine in the Heart” (1995) about emigrant writers, immigrants from Ukraine.

Numerous articles in the URE, ULE, Shevchenko dictionary, a bibliographic index compiled for his seventieth birthday, contains 1299 items.

He prepared for publication, wrote an afterword, and compiled illustrated materials from his own collection for the book “Ivan Senkov. Hutsul heritage. " (Kiev, Ukrainian Studies 1995). The author of articles directly related to the Hutsul region and writers associated with it, "Gnat Khotkevich and his historical prose."
