Sports career

Starting to study drafts at the age of 14 under the leadership of Valdis Zvirbulis and Petr Freidenfeld , Andris Andreiko twice (in 1959 and 1960 ) became the USSR champion in international drafts among young men, and in 1961, having just graduated from school, but already in the rank of three-time champion of Latvia , first won the title of champion of the USSR among adults. Moreover, he was the only participant in the championship to finish the distance without defeat [1] . In 1962, after winning the international tournament in Baku, Andreiko received the title of international master, and in 1966 , winning the tournament for applicants for the right to play the match for the world champion , the title of international grandmaster .

The first attempt to win the world title was unsuccessful: in January 1968 Andreiko lost the match to the current champion Iser Kuperman . However, later that year he became the winner of the World Cup in the Italian city of Bolzano, held in the format of a round robin tournament. Having drawn the game with five rivals from the USSR and the Netherlands, the 25-year-old grandmaster beat all the other participants, half a point ahead of Cooperman. After that, he twice defended his title in matches with Kuperman in Moscow and Tallinn and lost it only at the 1972 World Cup, then losing in 1973 the title game against the Dutch draftsman Ton Seybrands . The following year Andreiko won the European Championship in international drafts - the second of the Soviet drafts players after Kuperman (1965).

In addition to three world titles and one European title, Andreiko won the USSR championship in international drafts eight times. He was an improviser in checkers, his game was distinguished by a high pace (he was especially strong in time pressure and blitz ), a sharp combinational manner and the uniqueness of each game. According to Vladimir Wigman and Boris Feldman, Andreiko deliberately created complications in the games that were not amenable to calculations, and in the same position with different opponents he could play differently, based not on theoretical calculations, but on intuition and understanding of the psychology of the partner. The Dutchman Rainier Keller formulated the same observation harder: “He is not fighting with a position, but with an opponent” [2] [3] .

Murder

After the highest achievements in Andreiko's career, recession and depression came [2] . Former world champion began to abuse alcohol in random companies. On the morning of March 10, 1976 Andreiko brought home a random drinking companion - the former sailor of the fishing fleet Igor Vasenin [4] .

Andrejko at one time for sporting achievements was awarded a two-room apartment in the Ilguciems district of Riga. According to Soviet ideas, the ex-world champion lived richly: in the apartment, in particular, there was an imported refrigerator with expensive alcoholic drinks and a two-cassette recorder, as well as gold champion medals and money. Andreiko continued to drink at home in the company of Vasenin and at some point lost consciousness. After a walk around the apartment where he saw many valuable things, the guest decided to kill the owner and hit him 17 times on the head with an iron wrapped in a towel. After that, he began to collect valuables in a bag [4] .

At this time, Andreiko's wife, Lyubov, rang the doorbell of the apartment, with which he no longer lived. Vasenin told her that Andris had a woman, and refused to let her into the apartment. Then she asked a neighbor to watch the apartment while she called the police. The neighbor, however, could not stop Vasenin when he left the house. The taxi driver refused to carry a drunk man in blood-stained clothes, and he went home by tram. Having changed clothes, he went to the station to escape to Ventspils , but, having called home from the station, he already found the police there. After that, he went to the police station with confession. By court order, he received 15 years in prison [4] .
