When the Great French Revolution began , Cambon led a trading company. Elected to the Legislative Assembly , and then to the Convention (where he served as chairman from September 19 to October 2, 1793 ).
He soon became visible due to his good knowledge of finance and became so important that the Convention entrusted him with the management of all finances. He compiled the main book of public debt - a matter of great importance, which brought order to French finance. A hardworking, selfless and honest man, Cambon everywhere abused, demanding reports from Danton , blaming Dumurier and Fabre d'Eglantin , trying in vain to reduce the excess of bank notes.
As a politician, he voted for the execution of the king, but stood for the Girondins during their disgrace, did not approve of terror, and contributed to the fall of Robespierre .
He continued to manage the finances of the republic until April 1795 , although he did not approve of the reaction against the Republicans. After Prerial 1 (May 20, 1795 ), he was outlawed, but the amnesty of 4 Brumaire (October 26 of that year) allowed him to return to his hometown, which elected him a member of his municipality. Despite the insistent requests of his friends, he decided to remain a private person and only in 1815 , during the Hundred Days , he agreed to be elected to the Chamber of Deputies. Exiled in 1816 as a regicide, Cambon died in Brussels in 1820 .
