Podstrigach, Yaroslav Stepanovich

Born in a family of Ukrainian peasants Stepan and Anastasia Podstrigach. Father in the thirties of the last century led the local department of the Ministry of Food. In 1940, the father of Stepan was arrested by the NKVD, and he soon dies in a concentration camp near Sverdlovsk. Mother with two sons - 12-year-old Yaroslav and 3-year-old Taras, was deported to the village. Dzhezkazgan of the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan. In 1945 he returned to Ukraine to his native village.

After graduating in 1946 from the Mezhiritsky secondary school, Yaroslav Podstrigach entered Lvov State University. Willow Franco to the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, and in 1951 to graduate school at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Automation of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (since 1964 - the Physics and Mechanics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). In 1954 he became a candidate of science.

In 1954-1972 Ya. S. Podstrigach works at the Physics and Mechanics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Member of the CPSU since 1960.

In 1969 he received a doctorate in physical and mathematical sciences. In the same year he was awarded the academic title of professor, and he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

In 1972, Ya. S. Podstrigach was elected an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and appointed chairman of the Western Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences.

In the years 1972-1978. he leads the Lviv branch of mathematical physics that he created at the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine . Since 1978, after the branch was transformed into the Institute of Applied Problems of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Yaroslav Stepanovich was its director until the last days of his life.

In 1972 he was elected a full member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and was appointed chairman of the Western Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 1975, he was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine for the development and implementation of optimal regimes of zonal tempering of welded shell-type structures. For a series of works "Mathematical Foundations of Thermomechanics" in 1977 he was awarded a prize to them. M. Krylova, Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Since 1978, Academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences Podstrigach Ya. S. - Director of the Institute of Applied Problems of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. In 1979, he was awarded the honorary title “Honored Worker of Science of Ukraine”.

Academician of the NAS of Ukraine Yaroslav Stepanovich Podstrigach is an outstanding mechanical scientist, the founder of theoretical modeling in the mechanics of deformable media, taking into account their structure, the relationship of mechanical and non-mechanical processes. At the same time, he attached particular importance to the roles of classical and modern branches of mathematics, which are urgently needed when constructing mathematical models for taking into account and combining in these models the latest achievements in continuum mechanics, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, condensed matter physics and chemistry, electrodynamics, and other related branches.

Since 1972, Ya. S. Podstrigach is a member of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine, chairman of the Western Scientific Center of the NAS of Ukraine. He was a member of the USSR National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, a member of the bureau of the scientific council on the problem of “Mechanics of a deformable solid” under the Presidium of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. Ya. S. Podstrigach carried out a great scientific and organizational work as the chairman of the section of the scientific council of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the biosphere at the Western Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the chairman of the branch of the scientific council of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the issue of Cybernetics, a member of the interagency scientific council on the problems of scientific and technical and socio-economic forecasting under the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and the State Planning Commission of Ukraine, chairman of the scientific section of mathematics and mechanics and the board of the Lviv scientific-industrial instrument-making complex a. He was a member of the editorial board of a number of scientific journals, the editor-in-chief of the republican interdepartmental collection "Mathematical Methods and Physico-Mechanical Fields".

As an outstanding strategist, Academician Ya. S. Podstrigach understood that highly qualified personnel were needed to solve the urgent problems of the national economy. He devoted much effort and energy to improving all the links in the region for the training of specialists, scientific, scientific and pedagogical workers — secondary, higher schools, research institutions and enterprises. He successfully combined fruitful scientific and scientific-organizational work with pedagogical activity. For more than 25 years he taught at the Lviv University. Ivan Franko, headed the department of mathematical modeling, created at the university on his initiative at the Institute of Applied Problems of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

The scientific legacy of the scientist is an inexhaustible source of bold ideas, fundamental research published in more than 300 works, in particular in 14 monographs.

Prepared more than 50 doctors and candidates of sciences.

Laureate of the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR in the field of science and technology ( 1975 ). The prize was awarded for the development and implementation in practice of optimal regimes of zonal tempering of shell-type welded structures.

In 1977, Y. S. Podstrigach awarded them. M. M. Krylova for the series of works “Mathematical Foundations of Thermomechanics”.

Honored Worker of Science of the Ukrainian SSR ( 1979 ).

He was buried according to Christian custom at the Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv.
