In 1972, Pierre Merlin , a graduate of the Strassburg Conservatory, took the place behind the reels of the Gong . With his participation, the following discs were released: "Angel`s Egg", "You", "Shamal". After the founder of the group left her, control over the collective gradually passes to Merlin . Under his influence, Gong is transformed to the performance of an architecturally harmonious jazz-rock with an expanded percussion section. Under the name "Gong" comes two disks "Gazeuse" and "Expresso II", which are actually the first works of the Pierre Merlin group. During this period, rock stars such as Mike Oldfield , Allan Holdsward , Mick Taylor , Didier Lockwood , Darryl Way , Steve Winwood - whose names are symbols of the era, work in the group.

The team received the name “ Pierre Moerlen`s Gong ” by the end of the 70s, when moving from Virgin to Arista . After releasing several more albums, in 1981 the group was disbanded due to serious problems with management.

However, in the second half of the 80s, Merlin made an attempt to restore the team, which led to the emergence of "project" Pierre Moerlen's Gong. In fact, this name denoted several different groups that performed his music with the participation of Merlin. The Russian version arose at the beginning of 2001 for a one-time performance at the SKIF festival. Two of its members, Mikhail Ogorodov and Alexei Pleshchunov , a year later, entered the group recording the last lifetime album of Pierre Merlin Pentanine , which was also signed by Pierre Moerlen's Gong.
