Conditional baptism or baptism under condition ( lat. Baptismum conditionalis, baptismum sub conditione ) - baptism in Catholicism [1] over a person whose previous baptism is in doubt whether it was committed or not; at the same time, in the rite of passage, a reservation is made: “baptized (baptized) if not baptized”.
The ancient church did not know such a formula. Moreover, 72 by the rule of the Council of Carthage, such baptism is forbidden, according to this rule the babies are not exactly aware of the baptism: “it is proper to baptize them without any doubt” [2] . However, in the Latin Trebnik “Rituale Romanum” of 1617, this reservation is already included [3] . Peter Mogila in 1646, using the “Rituale Romanum” when compiling his Trebnik , included the conditional baptism formula in it, calling it “baptism under condition” [4] [5] .
According to the Code of Canon Law, before conducting conditional baptism, a serious preliminary investigation of the issue of baptism of a person is necessary. Only if such a study did not dispel doubts that actual baptism took place, is baptism performed under the condition [6] .
