Biography
Born on November 30 in Chernigov in the family of teachers. In 1948 he entered, and in 1954 graduated from the Kiev Veterinary Institute . In his student years he began his first scientific research in the field of veterinary medicine. Having defended his diploma, he entered the postgraduate department of the surgery department of the Kiev Veterinary Institute. In 1959 he successfully defended his thesis.
From 1960 to 1963 he worked in the scientific and organizational department of the Presidium of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. Since 1963 he moved to the Institute of Physiology. A. A. Bogomolets. In 1968, at the Joint Scientific Council of Biological Sciences at the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, he defended his doctoral thesis in the specialty “human and animal physiology”. Since 1972, he moved to the Institute of Hydrobiology, Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and headed the department of ecological physiology of aquatic animals. From January 1980 to the present - Director of the Institute of Hydrobiology, NAS of Ukraine.
President of the Hydroecological Society of Ukraine, editor-in-chief of the Hydrobiological Journal and its English-language publication (Hydrobiological Journal, USA).
Chairman of the dissertation council of the Institute of Hydrobiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on the protection of doctoral and master's theses in the specialties of "hydrobiology" and "ichthyology".

Scientific Activities
The works of V. D. Romanenko on the development of scientific foundations and conceptual approaches to the environmental assessment of the impact of hydrotechnical construction on water bodies, water quality and bio-productivity, and the creation of a system for the ecological classification of surface water quality have received wide recognition. He first formulated the basic concepts of hydroecology as a science, which combined ecological and biological approaches in the study of aquatic ecosystems. In the field of ecological physiology of aquatic animals. D. Romanenko disclosed metabolic mechanisms of adaptation of aquatic animals to the physicochemical factors of the aquatic environment. The practical result of his research was the development of the scientific basis for managing the biological productivity of natural and artificial aquatic ecosystems, which are the basis for the development of the foundations of experimental hydrobiology and aquaculture.
Viktor Dmitrievich founded and formed the scientific school of the ecophysiology of aquatic animals, which made a significant contribution to the development of basic and applied research in freshwater ecosystems. Under his scientific leadership more than 20 candidates and doctors of science were trained.
