Vampyr is an Action / RPG computer game developed by French studio Dontnod Entertainment for Windows , PlayStation 4 , Nintendo Switch and Xbox One and released by Focus Home Interactive in 2018. The game takes place in London in 1918. The main character, the doctor Jonathan Reed, turns into a vampire and must put up with his new state, torn between the Hippocratic Oath and his newfound bloodthirsty kind. The " half-open " world of the game is divided into several related areas, the state of which may vary depending on the player's actions.. The player is not obliged to kill other characters to successfully complete the game, but the hunt for people allows the hero to recover his lost strength and acquire new abilities; In battles, the player can use both the weapon and the supernatural abilities of the vampire. . Developers visited London and used historical materials to reproduce the city in the beginning of the 20th century in detail. . The game received mixed press ratings: reviewers praised the atmosphere of the game, the dialogues, and the character development system, but criticized the combat system, the overall story, and the multiple technical problems of the game .

Gameplay
Vampyr is a third-person action / RPG [7] in which the player is offered a variety of different activities and tasks. Some tasks are connected with battles with various enemies, bosses and "mini-bosses" - a character must fight with them and destroy them. Another important aspect of the game is social activity: the hero encounters many non-player characters, some of which are more important than others; A player can enter into dialogues with the residents of London, spy on them, and even control other characters with the help of his vampire abilities [2] . To kill successfully, Reed must collect information about future victims - to study their habits, collect evidence and maintain certain relationships, communicating with the people of London [8] [9] .
The city of London in the game is partially built on the principle of an open world - in the form of large areas connected by transitions [10] [11] . Between areas of the city (with the exception of a few locations that were initially inaccessible for plot reasons), you can move freely almost from the very beginning of the game. The game world is not as big as the worlds of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or the Grand Theft Auto games, so the developers call it “half-open” and not open [3] [12] .
Each area of London has its own scale associated with the activity of the game character - at first killing leads to insignificant consequences, such as higher prices for merchants or unavailability of some side quests, but if the hero gets too rich in some area, they will invade him monsters, killing all the inhabitants and making the area inaccessible to the player. However, the player has the opportunity to complete the game, even if all areas of London have become inaccessible [13] .
Thanks to a special vampire vision, Reed is able to find out if a particular city dweller is sick and what is the quality of his blood [14] . At the will of the player, any character in the game can become a victim of the hero, but each death has consequences that affect the plot [8] [15] . All Londoners who can be found in the game have their own names, friends, families, and daily routine [16] , so killing any of them will affect many other characters [3] . The most important moments of the game are connected with the player’s decision regarding the “pillars of society” - the most important characters around which the life of a community revolves. The player can kill them, spare or turn them into vampires [3] .
Many options in dialogues with non-player characters are initially unavailable — in order to open them, Reed must perform various tasks, ask other characters, or watch a person of interest from afar [9] . As a doctor, the hero can heal sick or wounded citizens, thus gaining benefits [13] [9] . The healthier the citizen and the more information about him collected Reid, the more experience points brings the murder [17] .
The game can be completed without killing anyone [7] , which makes it possible to preserve the image of a doctor in the best way [18] , but this prevents the player from receiving new levels [19] . The reward in the form of experience points for killing civilians is much higher than for destroying ordinary enemies - but as conceived by the developers at the same time makes him feel remorse: with each murder Reed learns the last thoughts of the victim [16] . Reed can turn other people into vampires [20] and cannot enter other people's homes without an invitation [21] .
In battles against enemies - humans and supernatural monsters - a player can use various edged weapons [2] , including improvised ones, such as saws [22] , as well as small arms like crossbows [2] or Webley revolver [22] [8] . A character can carry weapons separately in his right and left hands and combine them as needed [2] . Weapons can be improved by using items that the player finds on the bodies of the victims. The game does not provide a system of randomly generated trophies, but there is a system for creating objects - weapons and drugs [2] .
When using vampiric forces in combat, the character loses health and energy. He can replenish lost strength by drinking human blood [23] ; Moreover, the absorption of blood allows the hero to discover new vampiric abilities and replenish lost strength [23] . According to the game designer Florent Guillaume, the game has three main branches of the development of abilities: associated with shadows, animal instincts, and communication with people [2] . Among the vampire abilities are, for example, the ability to make blood in the veins of an opponent boil or curl; the ability to grow sharp claws for melee, like Vampire-Vulkodov; the ability to control the shadows in order to hide in the dark or attack enemies [24] . The ability to "jump" makes it easy to move away from pursuit and jump over the abyss [11] [7] , and after improvement allows you to cause damage in a collision with an enemy and gives temporary invulnerability [25] . The ability of hypnosis allows you to influence the behavior of the victims, for example, allowing you to take them to an inconspicuous place and feed without engaging in battle [11] , or to extract valuable information from the interviewee [26] [17] .
Setting and Story
The game takes place in London in 1918, shortly after the First World War and during the pandemic of the "Spanish" flu [27] . Under the player’s control is the protagonist of the game, Jonathan E. Reid ( Eng. Jonathan E. Reid ) [23] , a vampire doctor whose bloodlust causes him to kill innocent people. Reed initially has no idea about who turned him into a vampire, and about the morals and etiquette of these creatures; he studies vampires as a rationally minded doctor with a scientific mindset [28] . Reed was a renowned physician and before becoming a vampire, many characters — including doctors and patients — treat him with respect [29] . The game does not provide the ability to create and customize your own character [2] .
During the game, the hero encounters several types of vampires. Thus, the ekons ( eng. Ekon ) resemble classic vampire aristocrats, they are refined and charming, and it is to the econs that Reed’s mentor, Lady Ashbury, belongs to econ. The ekons have their own gentlemanly club, "Ascalon", where women are not allowed. Scali ( English Skal ), on the contrary, are at the bottom of society, they live in the sewer tunnels under the city [24] and are in some way connected with the epidemic of the “Spanish flu” that has engulfed the city [20] ; the very name of this clan means "slaves" [24] . Vulkods ( English Vulkod ) are a cross between vampires and werewolves - they can change their appearance, turning into beast-like creatures with long fangs. Nemrody ( eng. Nemrod ) despise other vampires and themselves hunt them; they hide from the player, so that the player can only then, collecting information, guess that this or that character he encountered was one of Nemrodov. All these types of vampires have a common origin, and vampires have their own legends about this origin, associated with English folklore [24] . All the supernatural beings in Vampyr are associated with vampires - there are no separate ghosts, living dead or werewolves in the game, but according to the script writer of the Bauroger game, these folklore monsters may simply be different types of vampires [20] . Only a few Londoners are aware of the existence of vampires, but the secret society of vampire hunters - “Guards of Prywen” ( English Guards of Prywen ) - pursues the hero, trying to destroy him [28] . Vampire hunters are the main enemies in the first stages of passage [14] . The plot of the game is connected with the mystery of the origin of vampires [28] [24] .
Synopsis
At the beginning of the game, Reed returns to London from the Western Front and is attacked by an unknown vampire. Risen from the dead, Reed finds himself in a mass grave in Southwark , among the bodies of those who died of the flu; his unwitting victim is his own sister Mary [17] . Reed manages to escape from the vampire hunters, save the life of the preacher Sean Hampton and find a person who knows a lot about these creatures - this is Dr. Swansea, head of the Pembroke Hospital in East End . Swansea takes Reed to work at the hospital — he knows very well that his new subordinate is a vampire, but he is not going to give it out to vampire hunters [13] .
Elizabeth Ashbury, an aristocrat whose donations there is a hospital, is also a vampire. Ashbury is blackmailing someone, extorting money from her, and she tells Reed to find an extortionist. Dorothy Crane, a nurse in the same hospital, turns out to be a mysterious extortionist; she uses Ashbury's funds to open her own free hospital in Whitechapel slum. Reed also secretly attends Mary’s funeral in the city’s cemetery. During his absence in the hospital, a mysterious incident occurs: in the opinion of Swansea, previously rescued by Reed, Sean Hampton turned into a vampire grin and killed an elderly patient, Harriet Jones. Reed manages to find Hampton, but he, really being a rock, denies his guilt and sends Reed to look for answers in the sewer tunnels. In the dungeons near London, there is a whole community of rock under the direction of the old vampire Bridget - and among them is Harriet Jones, an unusually mutated rock: Hampton did not kill her, but, on the contrary, helped her escape. On the way back, Reed is faced with another hostile vampire - this is his own sister Mary, who also rose from the dead; Reed has to destroy it.
Ascalon, a club of noble econ vampires from the West End , accepts Reed to join his ranks; Club Chairman Lord Redgrave instructs Reed to investigate the outbreak of a flu epidemic in the West End. The investigation takes Reed to actress Doris Fletcher - she turned into a monster like Harriet Jones. While Redgrave sends Reed to Aloysius Dawson, the richest man in England, to turn him into a vampire, “The Guardians of the Priest” arrange a raid on the Pembroke hospital - they consider Reed and Swansea to be the culprits of the epidemic. After beating Swansea from the hunters, Reid finds out that the hospital manager is really to blame: he tried to treat Harriet Jones, pouring Lady Ashbury’s blood to her, but the patient turned into a monster spreading around the infection. The same creature - "Nightmare" - was the culprit of the Great London Plague in 1666 , but it was defeated by the vampire knight William Marshall . Reed makes medicine from the blood of William Marshall and King Arthur and takes it before the battle with Harriet Jones. For this battle, he is blessed by the bloody ghost Mirddin Will - the very creature that made both Reed and William Marshall vampire before him: according to Mirddin Will, Morrigan , Scarlet Goddess and the mother of all vampires carrying the death and epidemics.
After defeating the Nightmare, Reed goes to Scotland in search of Elizabeth Ashbury, whom he managed to love. Ashbury takes care of the old vampire William Marshall - he contracted it during the previous Nightmare appearance in 1666 and, like Reed, made medicine from the blood of great heroes, but used it not on himself, but on Ashbury. This made Marshall a prisoner of Ashbury Castle, and Elizabeth herself an asymptomatic curse. Depending on the decisions made by the player - whether many Londoners were killed during the game - Jonathan Reed and Elizabeth Ashbury leave for America or remain reclusive in the castle, like William Marshall before them; in the worst endings, Ashbury can commit suicide, and Reed can turn into a bloodthirsty monster.
Development
At the beginning of the game development, a team of 60 people worked on it, many of whom had previously worked on the previous Dontnod Entertainment project - the episodic game Life is Strange [9] ; by the end of 2016, up to 70% of the company's 120 employees were employed in the development [30] . If in the previous games of Dontnod Entertainment - Remember Me and Life is Strange - the story was built around female heroines, in Vampyr the main character was a man: according to the head of the company Oscar Gilbert, with the male hero “the plot works better”, although it’s about a vampire in a story with a lot of bright female characters [30] . The unusual spelling of the name Vampyr (instead of the modern English vampire ) was influenced by the story of how a certain Hungarian was accused of vampirism in the 18th century — his accusation was the first public document of this kind [31] . The theme of killing innocent people in the game as a payment for immortality allowed the developers to explore the dualistic nature of the protagonist as a vampire and as a doctor - to kill or stick to the Hippocratic oath and not to surrender to their vampire nature [4] [32] . According to screenwriter Stefan Bauverger, the creators of the game decided to go to the literary roots of the vampire image in the spirit of " Dracula " or " Carmilla " and build the story in accordance with this classic image: the vampire as a deceiver who manipulates his victims and hides his true nature at the same time, this “tragic figure forced to kill and take lives is not always willing” [28] .
The developers had intended to choose America for the 1950s as the place and time of the game, but, hoping to breathe more gothic mood into the game, they chose London in 1918 during the pandemic of the Spanish flu . Dontnod art director Gregory Syuch noted that the art style and atmosphere of the game was influenced by the paintings of the American surrealist painter Phil Hale [4] . An important source of inspiration for the developers was the television series, in particular, dedicated to the medicine of the beginning of the 20th century " Hospital Nicerkoker " and "London Hospital" , and also " Sharp peaks " [28] . Employees of Dontnod Entertainment studied the scene of the future game, traveling to London and taking photos [9] , and also collected information about events related to the period described - in particular, they visited the City , Temple and East End areas, but many parts of the city were rebuilt during the 20th century, therefore, for example, information about how Whitechapel looked in 1918, the port area or Dog Island looked like buildings, how citizens dressed up, what they ate - was restored from documentaries and historical books [12] . The composer Olivier Derivière, who previously worked on soundtracks for games such as Remember Me or Alone in the Dark [6], was engaged in creating musical accompaniment for the game.
The game uses the Unreal 4 engine [4] [8] . Developing a version of the game for the Xbox One was difficult, however, according to the developers, these difficulties were overcome and the version for this game console did not deteriorate compared to the versions for Windows and PlayStation 4 [33] . The postponement of the release date of the game from 2017 to 2018 was, according to the statement of the executive director of the studio Oscar Gilbert, due to certain technical difficulties, due to which the development schedule had to be shifted; thanks to the transfer of the developers the opportunity to further balance and polish the game [34] .
An early demo of the game was demonstrated at E3 2016 in June 2016 [35] . In May 2018, the developers reported that the game would not use Denuvo protection [36] .
Release
In accordance with the announcement made by the Focus Home Interactive publisher at E3 2017 , the release of versions of the game for Microsoft Windows platforms , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was originally scheduled for November 2017 [37] ; the output was later rescheduled for spring 2018 [34] . Customers who have pre-ordered Vampyr will have access to The Hunters Heirlooms , a downloadable add-on that includes a unique sword, pistol and costume for the hero [38] . In November 2017, the head of Focus Home Interactive, Cedric Legarrig, said in an interview with the MCV publication that the release of Vampyr would be considered successful if the game’s sales amount to about a million copies [39] .
