Development

For the first time, a new Maserati Ghibli car appeared at the Turin Motor Show in November 1966 [1] at the stand of the Ghia design studio, in which 28-year-old Giorgetto Giugiaro carefully worked on it. According to the new rules of the manufacturer, the model was named after the wind, this time - the hurricane South American. Ghibli was the latest front-engine Maserati supercar - the Bora , which began production during the Ghibli period, was already built with the engine above the rear axle.

Description

Back view

The design of the two-door coupe was quite extraordinary, some called it the most beautiful car from Maserati [2] . Locking headlights made it possible to underestimate the line of the long hood, which in itself was low due to the fact that the engine was equipped with a dry sump lubrication system.

The motor mounted under the hood of the Ghibli was very powerful and high-tech: it completely produced cast aluminum from four crankshafts and four carburetors with a volume of 4719 cm³ and produced 340 l. with. and accelerated a squat compartment with a low center of gravity to 265 km / h.

Also, the buyer was offered a 4.9-liter engine of the SS series with a capacity of 355 liters. with. and acceleration to 100 km / h in 6 seconds. A choice of 4-speed automatic transmission or 6-speed mechanics. Both suspensions were completely independent, with electronic adjustments of four positions: the front on MacPherson strut with anti-roll bar, the rear on telescopic shock absorbers. Front and rear disc brakes had ABS in double independent hydraulic drives with servo boosters. The car had two independent gas tanks of 50 liters each [3] .

Interior

The interior provided the driver and passengers with a high level of comfort that was not typical of the rest of the classic sports cars of the mid-1960s: Connolly leather and wooden panels, automatic air conditioning, electric mirrors, central locking, three-point seat belts and adjustable seats.

Although the rear suspension was sprung, nevertheless, the handling was very good, and in combination with high equipment, the model had a higher level of sales than its more expensive competitor - Lamborghini Miura [2] .

Of 1300 copies, 125 were released with the Spyder open body (it was possible to order a hard top or folding soft). 25 Spyder equipped with SS engines.
