Biography

Sinnadena is a derivative of a surname; Queen's personal name is unknown. Her father was the Byzantine commander Feodul Sinadenos, while her mother was the sister of Nicephorus III Wotaniat , the Byzantine emperor since 1078 . Scylitzes Continuatus , written by compatriot Sinnadena John Skilitsa , claims that "the emperor gave his niece, the daughter of Feodul Sinadenos, to the king of Hungary as a wife, after his death she returned to Byzantium." The name of the king, as well as the queen's own name, was not mentioned.

The key to establishing Sinnadena’s husband’s identity was the enamel decoration of the Holy Crown of Hungary, which depicts a person identified as “Geza, King of the Hungarians”. The death of Gesa I on April 25, 1077 corresponds to the story of the Skylica: after her, the Dowager Queen returned to Byzantium until the end of 1079 .

Sinnadena’s marriage date is even less obvious than her husband’s identity. The historian P. Kerble proposed a period between 1064 and 1067. He referred to the marriage union as a “private agreement” between the Duke of Gesa and the Byzantine commanders (including Sinnadena’s uncle Nikifor Wotaniath, who had not yet become emperor), who were in the Balkan and Danube territories.
