Dedicated to José Vasconcelos , philosopher and former presidential candidate, former president of the National Library of Mexico . The library area is 38000 square meters; [2] The originally planned construction cost was 954 million pesos (about 98 million dollars). [3] The Mexican Congress proposed planning to cut the 2006 budget, including cuts for all three branches of government. The National Action Party presented an alternative budget that retained a share for Enciclomedia and the Vasconcelos Library. [four]
The then President of Mexico, Vicente Fox, opened the library on May 16, 2006, and declared that this is one of the most advanced structures of the 21st century, which will be talked about all over the world. [five]
The library had to be closed in March 2007 due to construction defects. [6] [7] The Federation’s chief auditor identified 36 construction violations and made 13 liability claims for civil servants from the federal government. [6] Among the violations found was the incorrect installation of marble blocks worth 15 million pesos (about 1.4 million dollars). [6]
The library is located in the city center delegación Cuauhtemoc at the Buenavista railway station, where the metro , commuter train and metrobus hub are located. It is decorated with several sculptures by Mexican artists, including Ballena ( Keith ) Gabriel Orozco, located in the center of the building.
During the reign of Calderon , investments in the restoration of the library in the amount of 32 million pesos (about $ 3 million) were continued. [eight]
The library was re-opened to the public in November 2008 after a 22-month break in work.
