Content
History
The canton of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne was created in 1860, and until 2015 it included 16 communes. According to the law of May 17, 2013 and the decree of February 14, 2014, the number of cantons in the Savoy department decreased from 37 to 19. The new territorial division of the departments into cantons entered into force during the 2015 elections. The communes of the canton of La Chambres were added to the canton of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne on March 22, 2015, and the total number of communes of the canton increased to 30 [3] [4] .
Population
According to the 2012 census (considered the population of the communes that were included in the canton in 2015), the population of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne was 22,656 people. Of these, 21.9% were under the age of 20, 19.5% were over 65. 18.4% have higher education . Unemployment - 7.0%. The economically active population (over 15 years old) is 11093 people [5] .
Economics
Distribution of the population by occupation in the canton: 1.2% - agricultural workers, 8.5% - artisans, traders, business leaders, 7.8% - intellectual workers, 25.4% - social workers , 28.0% - civil servants and 29.2% - workers [5] .

Policy
According to the law of May 17, 2013 [3], voters of each canton elect two members of the general council of a department of different sexes during the election. They are elected for 6 years by a majority of votes based on the results of one or two rounds of elections [6] .
In the first round of the cantonal elections on March 22, 2015, 2 pairs of candidates ran for Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (turnout was 45.12%). In the second round on March 29, Pierre-Marie Charvaux and Monique Chevalier were elected with the support of 61.19% for 2015-2021. The turnout for the elections was 43.93% [7] .
