Biography

He received primary education in the Alexander Cadet Corps for minors , from which in 1832 he entered the Naval Cadet Corps . He was released from the corps by the midshipman in 1837; left at the officer classes and was assigned to active military service only in 1841.

A. S. Gorkovenko participated in several campaigns in the Atlantic Ocean and in the Mediterranean Sea ; but, as a result of an accident, he received a serious head injury when he fell from the bridge of the steamship-frigate " Kamchatka " and after that was forced to switch to coastal service.

In 1853, he was sent by the command as a representative from the Russian Empire to a maritime meteorological conference in Brussels , after which he made a business trip to the United States of America .

At the end of the Crimean War , during which Alexey Stepanovich Gorkovenko was under the head of the port of Kronstadt , he was appointed teacher of His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Nikolai Konstantinovich .

In 1860, Gorkovenko was appointed to the post of vice director of the hydrographic department , which he remained for the next fourteen years.

At the same time he performed various side orders; So, in 1864, Gorkovenko examined lighthouses and hydrographic institutions of foreign countries, and in 1875, already a member of the scientific department of the Marine Technical Committee , he was sent to the geographical congress in the city of Paris ; but due to illness he was forced to return to St. Petersburg , where he died on April 18 ( 30 ), 1876 . He was buried at the Nikolsky cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra [1] .
