What is known about Callistratus is that he is the author of a work entitled Ecfrasis ( Greek Έκφράσείς ; also known under the Latin name Statuarum descriptiones - “Descriptions of Statues”). The composition reached us in an incomplete form: descriptions of only 14 statues have been preserved.
Usually, “Descriptions of Statues” are published together with a similarly composed composition by the Philostrates ( Senior and Younger ) “Pictures” ( Greek Έίκόνες ).
