Biography

Juan Viana was born in 1966 in the Portuguese colony of Angola . In 1994, he graduated from the Law Faculty of Coimbra University, then studied in the specialty “Cinema” in the city of Porto . Since then, he has been involved in film production, worked as a sound engineer, director and screenwriter. He collaborated with many Portuguese directors, including Manuel de Oliveira (1908–2015), Juan Cesar Monteiro (1939–2003), Jose Alvara Morais (1943–2004), Felipi Rocha, Alberto Seixas Santos (born 1936), and Juan Cesar Monteiro (1939–2003) with the German director Werner Schröter (1945–2010), as well as directors from France (e.g. Jean-Claude Biet), Germany and Belgium (e.g. Rob Rombo).

The first independent directorial work of Juan Viana was the short feature film “The Pool” ( A Piscina, 2004 ). The film participated in the competition program of the 61st Venice Festival [1] .

In 2005-2007, Juan Viana became one of the authors of the 10-volume "Dictionary of Ibero-American Cinema"

In 2007, Juan Viana wrote the screenplay for the film “ Eyes of the Scarlet Color” (Olhos Vermelhos) of the Portuguese director Paulo Roche (1935-2012).

In February 2009, with the goal of producing authored documentaries and feature films, Juan Viana founded the production company Papaveronoir .

The short feature film by Juan Viana “Tabató” ( Tabatô, Tabato - the name of a village in central Guinea-Bissau ) , which tells about the colonial war in the former Portuguese colony of Guinea-Bissau , won a prize in the Berlinale Shorts short film competition of the Berlinale 2013 festival.

In 2013, Juan Viana also directed his first feature film, The Battle of Tabatô , which also premiered at the Berlinale . [2] Then the film was presented to viewers from other countries (France, Belgium, Germany). The film was also shown in Russia (Moscow) at the 35th Moscow International Film Festival (2013, translator Andrei Efremov).

Joan Viana is also the director of several documentaries.
