Start of construction dates back to 1146 in the monastery , founded in 1108. Originally, the cathedral was built in the Gothic style with some Romanesque elements. The main part of the work continued until the end of the XV century. Later introduced details of the styles of the Renaissance and Classicism . The building was badly damaged during the bombing of the city in 1944. The consecration of the restored temple took place in 1972.
Until Concordat Napoleon, the cathedral was the chair of the Saint-Malo diocese , after which the Bath and Saint-Brieuc dioceses were allocated and the Rennes archdiocese was expanded.
