Creation and goal setting
In March 1979, as a result of a coup d'état in Grenada, the Marxist party New Movement JUEL led by Maurice Bishop came to power. A regime of the type of “real socialism” was established , oriented to Cuba and the Soviet Union . Among the priority government measures was the accelerated creation of the armed forces.
Along with the People's Revolutionary Army ( PRA ), the People's Revolutionary Police ( PRP , created on the basis of the former police service ) and the People's Revolutionary Coast Guard ( PRCG ), the People's Revolutionary Armed Forces ( PRAF ) included the People's Revolutionary Police ( PRM ). Formed PRM on the principle of militia of the ruling party. The police’s goals were called “the fight against counter-revolutionary sabotage”, mobilizing the masses for party events and creating a PRA reserve of 5 thousand people.
As part of the PRAF, the People's Revolutionary Police obeyed Commander-in-Chief Maurice Bishop. The direct leadership of the PRM was carried out by party political commissar Captain Francis Gill [1] .
Task and structuring
The main objective of PRM was to ensure rapid mobilization in PRA. Under its implementation, PRM was structured according to territorial units that coincided with the army districts. Along with ground units, the police also included anti-aircraft units [2] .
Party propaganda actively encouraged the population to join the ranks of PRM [3] . As an instrument of party-state control over society, the police played a significant role in the system of power.
Split and Liquidation
In October 1983, the radical grouping of the New Movement JUEL led by Bernard Kord ousted Maurice Bishop from power. The PRA command supported Cord. October 13 Bishop was arrested. Bloody clashes between Bishop supporters and PRA units took place on October 19 in Grenada. Maurice Bishop and his closest supporters were shot at Fort Rupert. There was a split in PRM: some of the police remained on the side of Bishop, others supported the coup. Francis Gill joined the Revolutionary Military Council - the new Hudson Austin government created by the coup organizers.
On October 25, the US invasion of Grenada began . The regime of the New Movement JUEL was overthrown, the People's Revolutionary Police ceased to exist.
