Biography
Lyudovit Winter was born on November 1, 1870 in the city of Shagi (Austria-Hungary), was the third child of Alexander Winter and Henrietta Winter, nee Kacherova. He had an older brother Frantisek, a sister Mila and a younger brother Imrich. Louis Winter studied at the Technical Institute (now a university) in Vienna . His father Alexander in 1889 rented the Piestany resort from Count Ferenc Erd Эi, and in 1890 he invited Ludovit to help manage the Piestany spa.
In 1902, Ludovit married the widow of his brother Frantisek - Leone Winter (nee. Schauerova), who already had two children. In their marriage, they had 3 more children - Jan, Alzhbeta and Maria [1] . Initially, the Jewish family of Winter adopted Catholicism in 1907 [2] .
In 1909, after the death of his father, Ludovit completely assumed control of the Piestany spa. During his work in this capacity, famous buildings were built in Piestany, among which the most famous are the Workers Hospital, Kursalon, Františekov spa, Pro Patria, as well as the decoration of the city of Piestany - Thermia Palace (the building "Irma"). In 1919-1935, Winter was chairman of the Union of Slovak Resorts. Together with the notary Anton Kailich, dean Alexander Shindelar, who later became mayor, and other colleagues, he contributed to the prosperity of Piestany - streets, sidewalks and squares were repaired and paved, water pipelines and sewer systems were built, the flow of the Vag river, etc. was regulated [2]
After the resort was nationalized by the communist regime in 1948, Louis Winter lived in seclusion and poverty. He was even forbidden to enter the Piestany spa island, where most of the spa facilities were located. Winter died in Piestany at the age of 98. He was buried in a cemetery on the Bratislava highway (Piestany).
The memory of Vinter today
In 1991, the main street in the center of Piestany, Winter Street, was named after him. Winter described his life and work in his memoirs issued in 2001 under the title “Memoirs of the Piestany”. Based on the book, director Dusan Tranchik made the film “Optimist” [3] .
