In the Tawahi quarter of Aden , two churches were opened for parishioners during the reign of Great Britain in this region: St. Anthony and St. Francis, built in 1839 and 1863, respectively. The churches of St. Joseph and St. Mary were also opened in the Crater quarter, built in 1852 and 1871. [6]
On May 4, 1888, the Holy See transformed the apostolic prefecture of the Roman Catholic Church into the apostolic vicar of Aden . In 1889, the Aden Apostolic Vicariate was renamed the Arabian Apostolic Vicariate, whose territory covered the entire Arabian Peninsula . [7] [6]
The Temple of St. Francis of Assisi was the cathedral of the Apostolic Vicar of South Arabia (or the Pope's vicar in Aden) between 1892 and 1974.
On June 29, 1953, the Apostolic Vicariate of Arabia transferred part of its territory (Northern Arabia) to the new Apostolic Prefecture of Kuwait (today the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia ). [eight]
Then, from 1974, the Vicariate residence was moved from Aden to St. Joseph's Cathedral in Abu Dhabi , United Arab Emirates . Currently, only this temple has the status of a parish church, the structure of which has still remained, but has significantly deteriorated.
The statue of Christ blessing the sea was attacked several times - stones were thrown at her and shot. But she is still there. When there was British rule in this region, a boy-only school (St. Anthony's School) operated near the church. When the British left Aden, the Yemeni government expropriated the school and built a wall between the temple and the school.
