Description
Small termites, the length of soldiers less than 1 cm. The lateral edges of pronotum, mesonotum and methanotum are smooth (they are serrated in Armitermes ). The head capsule is smooth, without punctures or protrusions [3] . The head of monomorphic soldiers is distinguished by a long nose-tubule (a fountain, whose length with a head is less than 2.3 mm), which serves to spray chemical substances that frighten off enemies ( ants and other predators); it is directed slightly upwards (for a similar kind of Mapinguaritermes, the tubule is directed forward, and its length together with the head is at least 3 mm). The toads of soldiers are developed, functioning, slightly asymmetrical (similar- looking Mapinguaritermes have symmetrical mandibles). Labrum wider than its length. Formula spurs workers and soldiers shins: 2-2-2. The antennae of workers and soldiers are 13–14-segmented [1] [3] .
Systematics
The genus was first formed in 2012 on the basis of the selection of several previously described species from the genus Armitermes (the type denotes the species Armitermes euamignathus Silvestri , 1901). The generic name is given in honor of the Italian entomologist Professor Filippo Silvestri (Dr. Filippo Silvestri , 1873–1949), who made a great contribution to the study of termites, made an expedition to South America and described a typical species of this genus [3] .
