Biography
Born in San Francisco in a Jewish family of two immigrants and socialists, opponents of the First World War . In 1934, Malvina Milder ( Milder - maiden name) married William Reynolds, a carpenter and a communist leader, and in 1935 they had a daughter, Nancy. Malvina studied at the University of California at Berkeley , where she specialized in English, and after completing her dissertation in 1938 , received a doctoral degree.
Although she played the violin in a dance group when she was about 20 years old, she began her career as a songwriter late. She was over 40 when she met Earl Robinson , Pete Seeger and other Folksinger and singer . She returned to study at the University of California , Berkeley , where she mastered musical theory . She composed several popular songs, including: “Little Boxes” (“Boxes” - a song about provincial life, inspired by the Daily City in California ); “What they did to the rain”, about fallout, recorded by the group “The Searchers”; “It Isn't Nice” (“There is nothing good in that,” an anthem to civil rights); “Turn Around” (“Look around” - about how children grow up. Later the song was performed by Harry Belafte ) and “There's a Bottom Below” (“The bottom is even lower” - about depression). Reynolds is also known as a songwriter for children's songs, such as “Magic Penny” (“Magic Coin”) and “Morningtown Ride” (“Journey through the Morning City” - this song, recorded by the band "The Seekers", took first place in the British Parade in December 1966 ).
The film-biography Love It Like a Fool (“Love it to Madness”) was shot several years before her death in the 1978th. The most famous song "Little Boxes" was re-heard by everyone after it hit the soundtrack of the popular TV series Datura ("Weeds").
In one of her speeches, Malvina Reynolds said: “I was once introduced as a woman who wrote so many songs that she must have written a song before breakfast every day. It wasn’t true, and one morning I decided that write a song before breakfast - then it turned out "Little Boxes". ''
The melody of the song “Little Boxes” was used by Aleksey Khvostenko for his song “We are the best of all” ( Kettle Wine album).
