The Apostolic Nunciature in Poland was established in 1555. The apostolic nuncio received its first diplomatic rank, the rank of ambassador, in accordance with Article 14 of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations .

Three nuncies in Poland were elected by the popes. Three were cardinals when they were appointed nunci, and the rest, with the exception of Filippo Cortesi, later became cardinals.
