Apostolic Nuncio in Poland

The Apostolic Nuncio in Poland is one of the oldest diplomatic posts of the Holy See , established in the 16th century .

The Apostolic Nunciature in Poland was established in 1555. The apostolic nuncio received its first diplomatic rank, the rank of ambassador, in accordance with Article 14 of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations .

Three nuncies in Poland were elected by the popes. Three were cardinals when they were appointed nunci, and the rest, with the exception of Filippo Cortesi, later became cardinals.

  • Cesare Orsenigo , the apostolic nuncio in Germany , but his power extends to Poland after Cortesi was expelled from November 1, 1939, as a result of the annexation of Poland by Nazi Germany.

  • William Godfrey , chargé d'affaires in London after 1940.

People's Republic of Poland

The Communist Government of the Polish People’s Republic did not recognize the apostolic nuncio from 1947 to 1989, but two apostolic delegates were appointed to formally solve the problems:

• Luigi Poggi - (February 7, 1975 - April 19, 1986 - appointed apostolic nuncio in Italy and San Marino);
• Francesco Colasuonno - (April 9, 1986 - March 15, 1990 - appointed apostolic delegate to Russia ).
