However, making comparisons with Kerouac’s early work, Ulin called them and the novel itself “claustrophobic, narrow in focus, divorced from the hardships of life.” Alison McCallock of the New York Times noted that the novel was “equipped with typical Kerouac ideas , themes and characters; but what he lacks is style ”and commented that“ Kerouac ’s followers will be delighted with this early work of his. ”In a review in the Washington Times, John Grigna said that the novel“ reflects the initial stage of his formed style - in particular, topics like male friendships, travels and adventures, the attractiveness of open roads, or, in this case, the open sea. ”Grigna concluded that the novel is“ more than just a youthful book. Although this work is far from polished, it still has a few small gems. ”The Wall Street Journal reviewer Sam Sacks described the book as“ bad, ”but added that“ it's a funny bad book that offers a lot of disarming facts about it. ” who Kerouac was as a person and as a writer before hiding under the mask of a hipster . ”He later added that“ the book is pleasing because, different from his later canonized works, she, since she is simply inexperienced, speaks honestly about her deficiencies. ”The book was and was rated In Entertainment Weekly by Chris Nashowaiti.
