Biography
Alexander Emil Lodovico Calandrelli was born on May 9, 1834 in the city of Berlin.
In 1848 - 1852 he studied at the Berlin Academy of Arts , then studied in the workshops of Friedrich Drack and August Fischer, and finally in 1864 founded his own workshop. Since 1884, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts.
Starting his artistic career with small wax figures, Calandrelli gained fame as a monumentalist - first of all, with such works as equestrian monuments to Frederick William IV and William I , the statue of artist Peter Cornelius , etc. Calandrelli also owns part of the reliefs for the Victory Column in Berlin , the statues “The Return of the Warrior” ( German: Glückliche Heimkehr ; from the group “Four Military Groups” and “Elba” (from the group “Four German Rivers”) in Tiergarten and other works.
Alexander Emil Lodovico Calandrelli died on May 26, 1903, Lankwitz. He was buried at Wilmerdorf cemetery , the grave has not been preserved.
