Creation History

In the design Letov used naive painting

The reason for the creation of the album was an overdose of LSD and the subsequent bad trip . According to Letov, this has not happened to him before. He describes the state in which he was tired of his own established opinions: “ It was not even depression, but a feeling of something completely hopeless when you suffocate simply from your opinions, from your fully established points of view .” [2]
Rethinking the received experiences of Letov, walking through forests and other uninhabited places, I recorded new songs on the recorder . As a result, a cycle of songs appeared, the meaning of which was closer to his 1990 project “ Egor and the Twinkers ” rather than to Civil Defense. The demo of this album, where Letov played drums, according to him, was distinguished by a more transparent sound, and the final version received a harder and heavier sound. Letov commented on it like this:

... this is the album of Yegor and Fellows, but in the process of recording it turned out that the material of Fellowship was played and recorded by GO, and in the most classical way. With all the characteristic components, from free improvisation to tough, demonstrative minimalism. Moreover, it was conceived purely and transparently sounding from beginning to end, but it turned out to be quite dense and heavy on the whole.

The album was recorded in a fairly short time, which makes it similar to the early work of the group. The album stands out against the background of others with a positive orientation and a bright mood, [3] as well as references to past works, including both the name (the name of the composition from the limited edition album “Egor and Tailed” “ Psychedelia Tomorrow ”) and the cover version on Oleg Lishchenko’s song “I feel not in my pants” and a rehash of the song from the first album of the “ Foul Youth ” group “I fly outside of all dimensions”. Letov called the album one of his best works, noting that he had done the thing for himself for the first time, without attacking anyone in the songs. In an interview after the release, he said that the album took all the material, and perhaps he will no longer release new albums.

All my last travels <...> have become transpersonal . This is something that it is impossible to speak about with words, and therefore, it is impossible to share or convey. In any case, I don’t yet know how to do this. <...> This experience - it is not applicable from the point of view of creativity, unfortunately. I don’t even know what I will do next, because I can’t talk about it in words.

Album Reviews

Letov himself described the album as follows:

I won’t praise the album, although I really want to <...> If the plan was implemented in “ DSG ” and “ Resuscitation ” 200 percent, then it’s 500 percent. At the moment, this is the maximum realization of what I wanted to say and do.

Critics took the album positively.

  • Maxim Semelyak in the Afisha magazine praised the album, calling it a "demonstration of rescue equipment" and the group's most intelligible and conscious album. [3]
  • The portal “Km.ru” called it “a hundred-year-old shining starfall”, [4] “an incomprehensible alloy of“ A Century of Solitude “with“ Starfall “” (Letov sang his favorite Soviet songs on the album “ Starfall ”).
  • The InterMedia portal noted the presence of self-repetitions on the album (“Dance for the Dead”) and an unnatural digital guitar sound [5] ..
  • Rolling Stone magazine compared Letov’s intonations with “herbivores”, calling the texts “a self-citation session”, but highlighting “So, a hurricane”, “Kaleidoscope”, “Radiance” among others.
  • In its review of the album, the Orthodox-political online publication Pravaya.ru critically reacted to the narcotic theme of the album and the lack of a love theme, albeit calling it "shining." [6] .
  • The observer of the business newspaper Vzglyad noted the “brief powerful psychedelia” of the album, calling it “not darkness, not light, but a solar eclipse,” comparing Letov with Boris Grebenshchikov . [7]

About Songs

  • Glory to the psychonauts - the album “Glory to the psychonauts” opens the album, in which Letov praises the psychonauts and people exploring the depths of their consciousness. In their ranks Letov enrolled Albert Hofmann , Timothy Leary , Terence McKenu , Alexander and Anne Shulgin and other people "expanding the boundaries of inner space." [8] The scandal connected with the performance of the song was related to the performance of "Civil Defense" at the "World Without Drugs" festival, where the group performed a program that did not completely coincide with the idea of the festival [9] . According to Letov, this was a deliberate act, especially since he did not attribute psychedelics to drugs. [ten]
  • Someone else
  • Fireworks - on this composition Letov recites a poem to the instrumental track.
  • So, a hurricane - in the drafts of Letov was originally called "There is no ford in the fire . " [eleven]
  • Radiance - The song was composed in December 2005. The verse was conceived by Letov in a lullaby style. According to some critics, the song is central to the album. [1] [5]
  • Dance for the Dead

  • Decline - under the noise accompaniment Letov recites a short poem.
  • Where is the instrumental composition, Letov sings along with the melodies in the background.
  • A stunning view from the window - this is the only song that got into the rotation of " Our Radio ", sounded in the program " Chart Dozen " on April 28, 2007 [12] .
  • Kaleidoscope - at the end of the song, Natalia Chumakova sings along to Yegor Letov.
  • To you - to the question of the visitor of the band’s official website, does the composition relate to Jesus Christ and the album cover (where Noah’s ark is depicted), Letov answered ironically: “ In your opinion, it turns out that Christ took everyone out on the ark? " [10]
  • I don’t feel in my pants - a cover version of the song of the band Peak Klaxon from the album “Extra Sounds”. According to Yegor Letov, the song is a link in the album .
  • All this is with you - in Letov’s drafts the song first appears as “Spirits are carried away” and does not include a long listing (“... and a rainbow on a cubic centimeter of snow”) [13] , then appears in a more complete version with the name “(Torture) wheel” spun around. " [eleven]
  • Frisky - on this composition Natalya Chumakova recites Letov’s poem to the krautrokovy accompaniment.
  • Outside of all dimensions - Letov’s re-singing of the song from the first official album of Civil Defense, “ Shitty Youth ”. Letov commented on her inclusion in this album: “ ... this song was simply created for“ Dreams ”. And the fact that it originally arose at the wrong time - such incidents happen . ” [eight]
  • Rabbits - the song was composed and recorded at the last moment, after the recording and information of the main compositions.
  • At night , the working title of the composition, which has been preserved in draft copies, is “Jump-Skok 2” ( “Jump-Skok” - a composition from the album “ Jump-skok: children's songs ”, one of Letov’s iconic songs of the early 90’s, a ten-minute composition, which he has repeatedly called the peak of creativity). The text was written by Letov after an overnight acid trip for several days. Fragments of Letov’s poetry of 1992-1994 were inserted in the middle of the song. The song was shortened compared to the draft. [10] [11]
  • Autumn is the last song of Yegor Letov. It describes the meaninglessness of being.
