Bulgarian-British relations are bilateral international relations between Bulgaria and Great Britain . The countries established diplomatic relations in July 1879 after Bulgaria gained independence from the Ottoman Empire. Throughout World War I , World War II, and the Cold War, states were enemies. Since 1989, relations have been friendly. In Bulgaria there is an embassy in London , and in the UK there is an embassy in Sofia . Both countries are members of the European Union and NATO .
