In 1823, Johnson was sent to St. Helena, where since 1826 he directed the construction of the Ledder Hill Observatory. During construction, Johnson traveled twice to South Africa to consult with astronomer [2] . In 1828, Johnson was appointed superintendent of the observatory, and for several years conducted astronomical observations. In 1835, he published a catalog of 606 major fixed stars of the Southern Hemisphere, for which in the same year he was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society [3] . When comparing the results of his observations with the results of Lacaille, Johnson noted the significant movement of Alpha Centauri [4] , which was reported to Thomas Henderson from the . Johnson's observational data allowed Henderson to take one of the world's first measurements of stellar parallax , although Henderson was in no hurry to publish it [5] .

In 1833, M. Johnson returned to the UK, where he enrolled at , University of Oxford , and graduated in 1839 with a master 's degree . From 1839 until his death in 1859, Johnson was the so-called "Radcliffe Observer" - in fact the director of the Radcliffe Observatory at Oxford University.
