The title of Baron Suffield was created on August 21, 1786 for Sir Harbord Harbord, 2nd Baronet (1734–1810), who had previously represented Norwich in the House of Commons for thirty years (1756–1786). The title of baronet Harbord from Suffield in Norfolk ( Baronet of Great Britain ) was created on March 22, 1746 for his father, Sir William Harbord (1697-1770). He sat in the House of Commons of Ber-Alston (1734, 1741-1754) and Dunwich (1738-1741).
He was born as William Morden, he took the surname “Harbord” by parliamentary act in 1742 in accordance with the will of his maternal uncle. The eldest son and successor of the 1st Baron, William Asheton Harbord, 2nd Baron Suffield (1766–1821), sat in the House of Commons from Lagershall (1790–1796) and Plympton Earl (1807–1810), served as lieutenant-lord Norfolk (1808-1821). After adopting the peer title in 1821, Lord Suffield became a liberal politician and advocated the abolition of slavery in the House of Lords.
His youngest son, Charles Harbord, the 5th Baron Suffield (1830–1914), who inherited his half-brother, served as Lord in anticipation (1868–1872) and Hunting Dog Hunt Dog (Master of the Buckhounds) in 1886 . After the death of his youngest son, John Harbord, the 8th Baron Suffield (1907–1945), the line of succession from the fifth baron died away. The title was inherited by his cousin, Jeffrey Walter Harbord, 9th Baron Suffield (1861–1946). He was the third son of the Honorable William Harbord, captain of the British army, fourth son of the 3rd Baron Suffield. He was succeeded in 1946 by his cousin, Richard Morden Harbord, 10th Baron Suffield (1865-1951). He was the son of the Rev. the Honorable John Harbord, the fifth son of the 3rd Baron. The 10th Lord Suffield had the rank of admiral of the royal fleet , participated in the First World War, and was also deputy lieutenant of Norfolk. In 1917, he received the royal permission for an additional surname "Hamond" (in honor of his maternal grandfather, Anthony Hamond).
