History

For the first time, the title of Baron Somers in the Peppermint of England was created on December 2, 1697 for Sir John Somers (1651-1716). He sat in the House of Commons from Worcester (1689–1693), held the posts of Solicitor General of England and Wales (1689–1692), Attorney General of England and Wales (1692–1693), Guardian Lord (1693–1697), Lord Chancellor ( 1697-1700) and Lord Chairman of the Council (1708-1710). In 1716, after the death of John Somers, the baronial title faded. His sister and heiress, Mary Somers, married Charles Cox (d. 1717), a member of the famous surname Worcestershire . Their grandson, Charles Cox (1725–1806), represented Raigit in parliament (1747–1784). On October 7, 1772, he was created the title of Baronet from Dumbleton in Gloucestershire ( Baronetry of Great Britain ). On May 17, 1784, Charles Cox was granted the title of Baron Somers of Evesham in Worcestershire ( United Kingdom ).

His son, Charles Somers Somers-Cox, 3rd Earl of Somers (1819–1883), a conservative politician, a member of the House of Commons from Raigit (1841–1847), and the Lord in anticipation (1853–1857).

In 1883, after the death of the 3rd Earl of Somers, the titles of Viscount Istnor and Earl of Somers were interrupted. The titles of the baron and baronet were inherited by his cousin, Philip Reginald Cox, 5th Baron Somers (1815-1899). He was the son of the Honorable Philip James Cox, the third son of the first Baron. After his death, the title passed to his great-nephew, Lt. Col. Arthur Somers-Cox, 6th Baron Somers (1887-1944). He was a conservative politician, he held the posts of Lord Lieutenant Herefordshire (1933-1944), Lord Waiting (1924-1926) and Governor of Victoria (1926-1931).
