Biography
Born in Suffolk , England , from 1843 he exhibited his works at the Royal Academy of Arts . In 1875 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy .
Thomas Wulner did not share the love of the Pre-Raphaelites for the Middle Ages , but fully agreed with the principle of "loyalty to nature", which John Reskin proclaimed. In his works, Wolner from the very beginning paid special attention to artistic detail. Gained fame thanks to its busts and engravings . For some time he was forced to emigrate to Australia , but then he returned to the UK , where he declared himself as a sculptor and art dealer. The most famous sculptures are “Civilization” ( Eng. Civilization ) and “ Virgilia ”, where Wulner tried to reflect the tense state of a person and the dynamics of human passions. Virgilia ( Eng. Virgilia ) - the wife of the protagonist in the tragedy of William Shakespeare " Coriolan " ( Eng. Coriolanus ), Shakespeare borrowed the plot of the manuscript of Plutarch , who tells about the Roman General Coriolan ( V century ) and his struggle with the rebels.
Woolner was also a poet who at one time gained a certain fame. His early poem, “My Fair Lady” ( born My Beautiful Lady ), published in the magazine “ Rostock ” ( 1850 ) is a typical fruit of pre-Raphaelite art. Subsequently, he abandons Pre-Raphaelitism in favor of the classical forms: Pygmalion , Silenus, and other late poems.
Working on the statue of Pak , Woolner conducted a comparative study of the shape of the auricle of humans and animals, as a result of which he first described the structure, later called the Darwin Hillock . [one]
In 1864, Wolner married Alice Wo. Initially, he was in love with Alice’s sister, Fanny, but she chose Wolner’s fellow Pre-Raphaelite colleague, William Hunt .
