The periodical was founded in 1862 in Warsaw by Haim-Zelik Slonimsky in order to popularize the natural and exact sciences in wide circles. The newspaper "Gatsefira" immediately gained distribution not only in progressive, but even in orthodox spheres [1] .
In 25 issues of the first year, popular articles were published on electricity, telegraph , meteors and the properties of light, ο photographs, outlines of the basics of chemistry and physics, etc. Appointed the next year as the inspector of the rabbinical school in the city of Zhitomir, Slonimsky stopped publishing, because, being at the same time a censor of the Jewish press, he could not be the editor of the newspaper he censored [1] .
In 1874, after the closure of the rabbinical school, Zinovy Yakovlevich Slonimsky resumed publishing the newspaper "Gatsefira" in the city of Berlin with the close participation of Lev Osipovich Kantor . Two years later, she again began to go out in the Polish capital [1] .
On special religious issues, "Gatsefira" kept a moderately progressive direction. In this regard, the newspaper did not change even after Nakhum Sokolov became its sub-editor (and after some time the chief editor ) in 1884 [2] . Under the latter, the natural-science department was significantly reduced and the political-journalistic department was expanded in its place. Sokolov’s political reviews and feuilletons , written in brilliant language, helped the publication attract an extensive readership [1] .
After the emergence of political Zionism, the newspaper, formerly indifferent to Palestinophilia, campaigning for emigration to Argentina , began to preach the Zionist point of view [1] .
In 1903, "Gatsefira", in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of its existence, released a literary collection. Since this year, she has also expanded the journalistic and literary departments and for some time (in 1904) issued a weekly illustrated literary supplement [1] .
In 1906, the publication was closed [1] .
