History

In the XIX century, Derbent was settled according to the following principle: the upper, oldest part of the city, closer to Naryn-Kala , is Muslim ; in the central, flat part - mostly Jews lived, and even lower, closer to the sea - Armenians and Russians . Then the main Jewish street of Tagi-Zade was called “Kele-Kuche” which means “Big (long) street”, and its other name is “Dzhugut makhalya” (Jewish quarter). The Big Derbent Synagogue, Kele-Numaz, stands on this street [1] .

The synagogue "Kele-Numaz" was built at the expense of five brothers - merchants Hanukaev. The architect who prepared the project for the building is unknown. The synagogue was opened in 1914 . However, over the past hundred years the building is very outdated. At present, the synagogue is under the jurisdiction of FJC .

By the time Soviet power was established, there were 11 Jewish religious buildings in the city, including the Kele-Numaz synagogue built by the Hanukkaev brothers and the Eshkanazi synagogue of European Jews, prayer houses and prayers Khivro, Hanukhi, Ogyo ”,“ Milhochi ”, named after the names of their owners or the names of the villages where their founders came from -“ Orogi ”(Arag),“ Mugorty ”(Mugart) and“ Penji ”(Heli-Penji).

In November 1903, the head of the civilian unit in the Caucasus, in response to a request from the mountain Jews of the region, ordered the city to build a church for the mountain Jews, but that it "... should not be called either a synagogue, or a house of prayer or a school."

In February 1904, Jewish society turned to the city authorities to allocate land for the construction of a new synagogue.

The petition stated that even during the time of the Derbent Khan, Mountain Jews built a synagogue for themselves on 2nd Komendantskaya Street (meaning the Midrash Ilyagu synagogue), but since their number has increased and the synagogue does not interfere with worshipers, and therefore the Jewish community asks allocate a free plot for the construction of a new synagogue.

However, the city authorities, guided by the above prescription of the head in the Caucasus, who prohibited the construction of a synagogue in the city, allocated a plot of 300 square meters to the Jewish community of the city. sazhens for building a prayer house at the corner of Golitsynskaya Street (now Buinaksky Street) and Kolodezny Lane (now Chapaev Lane).

Restoration

In 2000, the Kele-Numaz synagogue was in disrepair. In 2009, a meeting of members of the community was held, at which a decision was made on its reconstruction.

The synagogue building was demolished and reconstructed using old stones and new materials, under the guidance of foreman Davydov Agarun Gadalyaevich . The converted building became known as the “Jewish Community Center,” in which a special, historically intended place was allocated to the Kele-numaz Synagogue. This process was spent exactly 9 months.

Above the main entrance of the Jewish Community Center, you can see the inscription, translated from Hebrew which reads: "And let them make My Shrine to Me, and I will dwell among them."

The total area of the Jewish Community Center, which also housed the office of the rabbis, the male and female mikvahs, the Municipal Kindergarten and the Museum of Mountain Jews, is 2500 square meters.

The synagogue was opened in a solemn atmosphere on March 22, 2010 , with the presence of the President of Dagestan Magomedsalam Magomedov and the Chief Rabbi of Russia Berl Lazar [2] .
