Publication History

The mole man was created by screenwriter Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby and first appeared in the Fantastic Four (November, 1961), acting as the first opponent of the Fantastic Four.

Fictional Biography

Harvey Elder was once a simple man as a nuclear engineer, but society expelled him when he began to claim that there was a kind of underground kingdom. In addition, he was an outcast due to his appearance. Tired of enduring the ridicule of others, Elder went in search of the legendary underground kingdom. Finding a way out on Monster Island in the Bermuda Triangle area , he discovered the incredible technology left by the Deviant race. With their help, Elder enslaved the local people, the Moloids. In addition, he became blind, having seen many diamonds. Because of this, he began to wear glasses to negate the sensitivity to bright light. Elder took the name Mole Man and declared himself an enemy of humanity, which did not accept him.

Subsequently, the Mole-Man made several attempts to destroy the above-ground world. During one of these attempts, he ordered his monsters to destroy all the plants on Earth. His plans to plunge the planet into eternal darkness were frustrated by a team of superheroes called the Fantastic Four . The mole man made an alliance with a group calling itself Outcasts, as well as with Kala, the queen of the dead, with whom he fell in love, but was later betrayed by her. The moleman once acted as an adversary of the Avengers and consisted in an eternal confrontation with Tyrant.

Later, the Mole Man decided to stop his criminal activity and organized an alliance with Adam Warlock and the Infinity Watch. In exchange for their protection, he allowed them to use Monster Island as their headquarters. However, his correction did not last long and he launched another attack on the surface in order to find food and water for his moloids [2] . He encountered the Mighty Avengers and was defeated by the female form of Ultron [3] .

During the World War Hulk , the Mole Man gained control of some creatures from the planet Sakaar, which he used to attack New York . The tyrant tried to seize his control over them. However, they both fled, witnessing the rage of Skaar [4] . After some time, the Mole-Man temporarily teamed up with the Fantastic Four to explore the city ruled by the Higher Evolutionary in Subterrania and prevent its rise to the surface of the world [5] .

When Matt Murdoch returned to New York and again took the name of Daredevil , he learned from his friend Foggy Nelson that someone had stolen the coffin with his father’s body and transported it through underground tunnels. He followed the Moloids, who stole several coffins, and came face to face with the Mole-Man, who was ultimately defeated [6] .

The mole-man was chosen as one of the carriers of the rings of the deceased Mandarin , who longed to take revenge on Iron Man . He was the only one of the Mandarins who managed to escape [7] . Some time later, the Mole-Man and his Subterranians were in a civil war with the Subterranians controlled by his son, the Mole Monster [8] .

Strengths and Abilities

Despite the fact that the Mole-Man does not possess any superhuman abilities, his senses are sharpened to the limit and help him compensate for the loss of vision. The mole-man controls his own army of underground creatures, implicitly following his orders. In addition, he has a high level of intelligence. With his help, he quickly mastered the technology of the race of the Deviants. For a short time he was a carrier of the Mandarin ring.
