Sports Biography
At the 2014 World Short Course Swimming Championships in Doha, Popkov performed in two individual and three relay relay disciplines. At personal distances, the youngest Russians had the best chance at a 50-meter butterfly. Alexander confidently managed to overcome two qualifying rounds and reached the final of the competition. In the decisive race Popkov fought for the bronze medal until the finish line, but in the end he lost touch to the Ukrainian Andrei Govorov. The result of Popkov’s participation in the relay part of the program was a gold medal won at a distance of 4 × 50 meters, where Alexander sailed in the preliminary round. The Russian was close to the medal in the combined relay, but in the finals the Russian team came to the finish line only 4th.
At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Popkov performed at a 50-meter distance . At the preliminary stage, Alexander became only 7th in his swim, showing a time of 23.75. In the final list, this result allowed the Russian swimmer to take only 17th place, depriving him of the opportunity to fight for medals.
In December 2015, Alexander became a two-time winner of the European Championship in short water swimming.
In April 2016, Popkov took part in the Russian Championship, the results of which determined the composition of the Russian team for participation in the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . To get into the national team, the athlete needed to be among the two strongest, as well as fulfill the WFTU standard, which was tougher than the Olympic qualification standard “A” . At the championship Alexander performed at two distances. At the 100-meter butterfly Popkov showed the best time both in the preliminary stage and in the semifinals, however, the decisive swim was unsuccessful for Alexander. Sailing in 52.15 s.
