Hydrographic characteristics

The Vita River originates 2 km north-west of the village. Podgortsy , Obukhov district . In its basin are also the villages of Khodosovka and Lesniki , as well as the areas within the Goloseevsky district of Kiev - Pirogov and Chapaevka ( Vita ).

The length of the river. Vita - 13.9 km, basin area - 244 km². The usual width of the channel in the middle course is 7 m, and the valleys are 2.5 km. The channel is straightforward, in places artificially straightened (21.5% of the length). In the Kiev region, on the southern outskirts of the village of Chapaevka , the Siverka and Petil rivers flow into Vita on the left, and the Vita Stream (Khotovskaya river) flows a little downstream, which originates in the village of Khotov . Moreover, the Siverka tributary is much longer (29.2 km) than the Vita River itself. Vita flows into the Dnieper south of Zhukov Island .

According to the stories of local residents, the correct name of the river with emphasis on the last syllable is Vit a , from the word “soar”, that is, “a river that hovers (or winds).”

Runoff and water quality

The river is located on the southern outskirts of Kiev, outside the city. It flows in the north-east direction - in the direction opposite to the Dnieper stream, therefore it has a very small slope - 0.165 m / km. After the creation of the Kanevsky reservoir, Vita experienced a backwater. This led to an even greater deceleration of the course and strong overgrowing of the channel. There are cases when, due to a rise in the water level in the Dnieper, its movement at the mouth changes to the opposite. The average long-term water consumption is 0.58 m³ / second. The average long-term volume of water flow is 18.3 million m³ per year.

The chemical composition of the water is hydrocarbonate-calcium with a salinity of about 770 mg / dm³ and water hardness of 6.6 mEq / dm³. The indicators of water quality in the river are affected by the landfill for household waste near the village of Pirogov .

The filtrate, which is formed in the body of the landfill, pollutes groundwater , which in turn is a component of river flow.
