Kazan, Peter Simonovich

Peter Simonovich Kazan ( 1819 - 1878 ) - Russian theologian and historian ; Honored Professor of the Moscow Theological Academy, Secretary of the Moscow Committee of Spiritual Censorship.

Biography

Born on November 19 ( December 1 ), 1819 in the village of Sidorovskoye [ specify ] Zvenigorod district of Moscow province in the family of a priest.

In 1832-1838 he studied at the Bethany Theological Seminary , after which he entered the Moscow Theological Academy . After graduating from the Academy in 1842, Master XIII Kura, he was left with her as a bachelor in the Department of General Civil History, where he taught for 32 years, until his retirement. In December 1843 he was elevated to the degree of Master of Theology ; in 1850 he was approved as an extraordinary professor. Since 1851, he was the scientific secretary of the academy. In 1858, approved by an ordinary professor; in August 1876 - Honored Professor of the Moscow Theological Academy.

From 1852 to April 1864, he was a member of the Censorship Committee at the Moscow Theological Academy. After the transformation of the academy in 1870-1872, P. S. Kazansky acted as an assistant to the rector of the academy in the church-historical department.

In 1872, after 30 years of teaching, he was not elected by the Academy Council for the next 5 years; however, he was invited to lecture before choosing a successor. At the same time, presented by Kazansky in March 1872 as a doctoral dissertation, “The History of Orthodox Monasticism in the East” (in 2 hours - M .: Tip. Semen, 1854-1856) received a negative review by the reviewer. And only thanks to expert assessments submitted to the Council by the rector of the Academy A.V. Gorsky and her assistant professor V.O. Klyuchevsky, the dissertation was allowed to defend, which was successfully held in October 1873. However, in December of the same year, P. S. Kazansky retired for health reasons.

Peter Simonovich Kazansky is the author of numerous works on the history of Russian monasticism, the struggle of Christians against paganism, the initial period of the Russian annals, the monetary system of Ancient Russia, etc. In journalistic works, he defended the interests of the church, especially monasticism, sharply criticized A.I. Herzen .

Kazan was a full member of the Society of History and Antiquities of Russia (1847), a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Archaeological Society (1850), an honorary member of the Moscow Society of Lovers of Spiritual Education (1868), etc.

He died on February 14 ( 26 ), 1878 in Moscow.

Family

After the early death of his father, parish priest Simon Ivanovich Losev (d. 1833), the family was taken care of by his uncle (mother's brother), Archbishop Kirill (Konstantin Lukyanovich Bogoslovsky-Platonov) (1788-1841). All brothers had different surnames, all graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy , and all taught. Pavel Simonovich Thebes (Archbishop Plato) (1809-1877), after graduating from the Academy, taught at the Academy. Alexander Simonovich Nevsky (1810–1848) in the Bethany Seminary , Mikhail Simonovich Bogolyubsky (1826–1902) in the Moscow .

Peter Simonovich took care of the children of the early widowed sisters. His nephews brought up by him - Pavel Ivanovich Gorsky-Platonov (1835-1904) and Andrei Andreyevich Belyaev [1] (1847-1918) graduated from the academy and taught there. He spent the last years of his life in the family of Anna Andreevna Belyaeva’s niece (1845—?) And her husband, professor of the academy Peter Ivanovich Kazan (1838-1913).
