As the name implies, Non Stop Ecstatic Dancing was conceived by the group, by its own admission, under the influence of MDMA (better known as ecstasy). Vocalist Mark Almond later said in an interview with journalist Simon Tebbet that the sound of the album, as well as the sound of the group as a whole, was influenced by a short work at The Warehouse, a popular nightclub in Leeds . The album turned out to be more dance- oriented than Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret .

After the release of the album, the group announced a break: David Ball needed time to make peace with his girlfriend, and Mark Almond began performing with Marc and the Mambas. This fueled rumors about the band's breakup, but the duo subsequently released two more albums: The Art of Falling Apart in 1983 and This Last Night in Sodom in 1984.
