Biography
Saint Auxilius may have been ordained deacon at Auxerre, together with saints Patrick and Izernin [2] . Sabin Baring-Gould believed that Izernin and Auxilius were Celts : “They would not have been of particular use [to Patrick] if they had not spoken fluent Celtic language , and we can assume that they were Celts from Armorica , Cornwall , or Wales " [1] .
Saint Auxilios was the nephew of St. Patrick [3] , the son of his sister Darerka and her husband Restitutus from Lombardy [4] . He was one of nine brothers, eight of whom became bishops in Ireland. He is also called the brother of Saint Sekundin (Seachnaill) [5] . However, there is an opinion that the connection of the holy Sekundin and Patrick appeared in later legends, compiled by historians from Arma in favor of their patron. According to this opinion, Sekundin, most likely, was an independent missionary, possibly a companion of St. Palladium [6] .
On his early years and his studies of Auxilius, nothing is known for certain: he probably studied in Gaul , at the school of St. Herman . According to John Francis Schirman, in 438, six years after Patrick left for Ireland, Herman sent Auxilius and Izernin to help [7] .
The first known documentary evidence about Auxilia is in the Irish annals describing the arrival of the saints Secondondin and his brother Auxilia "to help Saint Patrick" [5] . Auksilius probably played an important role in the early Irish Christian church: there is a reference to the synod of bishops, held in 448 or 450 , which was headed by saints Patrick, Auksili and Izernin. This suggests that Auksilius had some special authority among bishops, for laws would be binding on the entire Irish church at that time [3] .
Saint Auxilius is called the founder of the church in Killashi (Killashee, County Kildare ) near Neisse in northern Leinster .
Both the Annals of Inishfallen and the Annals of Clonmacneus indicate the year 458 as the date of the death of Saint Auxilius [8] , but 454 or 455 years are also given as the date of his death [9] .
Honor
Commemoration of St. Auksilia is varied in old martyrology . In the Gorrti Martyrology, this day is indicated on February 7 [1] . The Book of Obits of the Church of Christ is commemorated on October 19th. Other passionalists refer to as the day of memory on April 16 or September 16. In the " Martyrology of Tallacht " - this is March 19, but in the " Annals of the Four Masters " it is indicated on August 27 as the day of the death of Auxilius [1] .
