Childhood and Youth in Jena

Louise Seidler was born May 15, 1786 in Jena . First, she spent her youth with her grandmother, learned to draw and make music as a child, and after the death of her grandmother, she arrived at the boarding school Sophie Ludolfin Steelers in Gotha , which she attended from 1800 to 1803. At the boarding school, she met her lifelong friends Pauline Gotter and Francisco Fanny Caspers. Her love of art developed at the drawing lessons of sculptor Friedrich Wilhelm Eugene Dell. She became a student of Gerhard von Kugelgen along with Caroline Bardua from 1808 to 1811.

Returning to Jena, she lived in her father's house, which was next to the official residence of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .

Bad Wedding

On October 14, 1806, the French won the battle of Jena and occupied the city. The inhabitants were subjected to brutal attacks, rozkvartiruvannya and robberies. During this time, Seidler fell in love with the senior doctor, Jeffroy, who came with the French corps of the French Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte and became his bride. Jeffroy, however, was sent to Spain before her marriage, where he soon died of a fever in a hospital. Then her parents sent Louise to Dresden to distract her from grief.

Beginning of an artist career

During a visit to the Dresden Art Gallery , which also impressed Goethe, she decided to become an artist. In this matter, she made rapid progress, especially since she became a student of the painter and professor Christian Leberett Vogel , who gave her lessons for free. Goethe, who, in returning from Carlsbad in 1810, stayed in Dresden for ten days, invited Louise to Weimar to paint his portrait. Goethe was pleased with the portrait made in Weimar.
