Biography
Giovanni Battista Casanova was born in Venice in 1730. He studied painting under the direction of Israel Sylvester the Younger and Christian Dietrich in Dresden.
In 1752 he went to Rome, where under the leadership of Anton Rafael Mengs he became an experienced artist
In Rome, he met Winkelmann and illustrated some of his writings. After being appointed professor and director of the Academy of Arts in Dresden in 1764, he contributed not only with his brush, but with a pen, to the development of artistic taste in Germany . His discussions on ancient art, published in Italian , were then translated into German ( 1771 ).
Anyone who knew him personally spoke [ who? ] that he was a very authoritative, elegant and capable person, but his character was not the best, because he was prone to polemic.
As an artist, he did not possess creative talent, preferring to copy from life, make portraits or copy old masters, he knew how to depict mythological and allegorical scenes with mastery.
Based on his experience, he developed a theory about painting, which he intended to publish, but only a manuscript in French remained, which is stored in the library of the Academy of Dresden . Among his interests was also collecting coins, medals and seals.
The tomb of Giovanni Casanova is located in Dresden in Alten Catholic Friedhof , where there are tombs of many other famous characters. His monument was designed by a student Franz Pettrich.
